The rest is an important piece of equipment and shots using it can win or lose matches. You often see players stretching over the table to avoid using the rest but this is not the best way in the long run. Players should practice using the rest and this will lead to greater confidence in using it. A coach can help a player to build his or her confidence in using the rest but listed below are some helpful pieces of advice.

It is often best to use your standard stance but at a 90 degree angle to the line of aim. This ensures that when you play with the rest your body does not impede your cueing.

When the tip is at the cue ball try and ensure that the elbow of the cueing arm is at a 90 degree angle. This allows for a proper follow through.

If the position of the balls allows, the rest can be placed along the line of aim in order to aid straight cueing.
